Description: This yellow ground Type III Holbein rug is amongst the most dynamic of a cadre derived from the early animal-figured carpets of Anatolia and depicted in European paintings from the 14th century onwards as a symbol of wealth and power.. The rug is dominated by splendid intricacy of its latch hooks which cluster on every surface, encrusting medallions, shingling spandrels and spiking lappet ends. With two fiery red combative octagons enclosing 'Lottoesque' angular hooked blue and green arabesques, rotating in orbit as two flaming Catherine wheels in a vibrant yellow sky, this rug is alive with kinetic energy and whirling dervish pigmentation. Colours: Ivory, cream-yellow abrashed to yellow, ice blue, sky blue, dark green, emerald green, charcoal, deep rose pink, deep salmon, dark purple, brick rust, mid-purple.
Condition: Excellent pile, a few small repairs along left border.
Circa: late 17th/early 18th century
Dimensions: 6 ft. 2 in. X 4 ft. 7 in.   (188 x 140 cm.)
Price: $75000
